The European Commission has recently unveiled its 2015 RES Progress Report. The main findings are summarised below:

  •  In 2014, the projected share of renewable energy in the gross final energy consumption is 15.3%. Only France and the Netherlands failed to meet their 2011/2012 interim targets.
  • The trajectories set in national plans become steeper closer to 2020; therefore further measures are in many cases required in order to achieve the targets.
  • There is an important gap for deep geothermal heat. The Commission requires urgent measures.
  • The Commission highlights the potential of geothermal to increase flexibility to the electricity systems.

In the progress report, the Commission announced an in-depth evaluation of the RES Directive by the end of 2015, as part of its review beyond 2020. The Commission plans to unveil its proposal for a new RES Directive by the end of 2016.
